An elastic for the waist is a material used in different garments. What makes this elastic stand out is that it keeps the garment in place on waist. This is a kind of waistband, but sewn into the garment. However, everyone has a different waist length; using the right size of elastic waist is crucial. Right? That brings up a question: How to measure elastic for the waist?
Interestingly, the use of elastic bands in the garment is becoming popular. Why? That’s because these elastics can remain in good stretchy conditions and don’t break quickly. However, if the size of this elastic waistband is not correct, it may not fit perfectly. In this article, I will discuss popular methods for measuring the length of an elastic waistband.
Why Is the Right Size of an Elastic Waist Important?
The elastic for the waist is generally used by sewing it inside the garments, such as pants or trousers. The purpose of these elastics is to keep the clothing (pants) fitted to your waist. Using it ensures that your pants, trousers or pajamas won’t slip down, and remain stable at your waist. In the section below, I will discuss why the right size of waist elastic is crucial:
- Imagine you buy an elastic that is too small. In this case, this elastic will cause discomfort when used with trousers or pants. How? This elastic will remain very tight on the skin and can even create red marks on your body.
- Suppose you buy the elastic that is larger. In such a case, elastic-waist trousers won’t fit your waist. Instead, your pants will sag and slip down, causing an uncomfortable experience. You will have to keep the pants up again and again because of the larger elastic.
- Pants with shorter elastic will be very tight on your waist. When you wear the pants, the elastic will remain fully stretched. As a result, the elastic will quickly lose its stretchiness and become less valuable. The stretchiness of the waist elastics will wear off, affecting their durability.
- The pants (clothing) do not look beautiful when the elastics are too loose or too tight. It affects the flexibility and overall movement of your clothing (pants or trousers). The size of the elastic can make even the most expensive clothing look ugly on your body. With the right size, the clothing remains loose and flexible, ensuring a better look.
How to Measure Elastic For the Waist?
Interestingly, measuring the elastic waistband is not rocket science. In fact, you can calculate the right size of elastic at home. There are two basic methods for finding the right size of elastic for the waist. In the section below, I will discuss both approaches to help you measure the elastic size correctly.
1- Waist Measurement Method
The first method is to calculate the elastic size by measuring the waist. For this method, you’ll need a measuring tape. Interestingly, there is no need for another person to measure the elastic’s size using this method.
Step 1: Stand Tall
First of all, stand still and make sure you’re not wearing thick clothes. I recommend a thin shirt. However, if you have privacy, you should remove the shirt as well to get the best and accurate measurement.
Step 2: Find the Waist Position
The second step in this method is to slow down your breathing and stay relaxed. As I said earlier, you’ll have to measure elastic size using your waist. It is part of your torso below the ribs and above the hips (hip bone).
Step 3: Measure the Waist Using Tape
Using the tape and generally wrap it around your waist (ideally above the hip bone). During this wrapping, ensure the tap is neither pulled nor too loose. Instead, it should generally sit around your waistline perfectly (comfortable).
Step 4: Take the Reading (Waist Length)
It is time to find the exact size of your waist. In this regard, you will have to measure tap reading. Check the exact number on the measuring tape at the end, which matches the start point (first end of the tap). Suppose it is 35 inches (just for the sake of argument). Everybody will have a different waist number or length.
Step 5: Subtraction and Use Formula
At this step, you’ll have a waist length (number). It is the waist length (from one end of the tape to the second end, which meets the first end). Now subtract 3 to 4 inches from this waist length. Here is the exact calculation
Size of elastic for waist = Length of waist – 3 to 4 inches
Suppose you have a length of 35 inches.
Size of elastic for waist = 35 – 4 = 32 inches
You should buy the elastic in a 32-inch size. If you wear this elastic in your pants, the pants will stay perfectly at your waist. It won’t feel too loose (sagging) and too tight (uncomfortable). Wondering why we subtract 3 to 4 inches from waist length to find the exact size of the elastic for the waist? Here is the answer
As you know, the elastic must be compressed around your waist to hold the pants in place. Right? This compression takes 3 to 4 inches, which we subtract from the waist length. If we don’t subtract, the elastic we will get will be too big. It will fit on your waist but won’t compress the pants there. As a result, the pants will stay loose and may slip or sag, causing discomfort.
2: Try-On Method (Fastest & Simplest)
The Try-On method is suitable if you have already bought a big roll of elastics. This method does not require you to use the measuring tap. I know not everyone has a measuring tape at home. If you don’t have one, worry not: this method will also give an accurate measurement of the elastic waist size.
- So, you’ll have to wrap the elastic around your waist. While doing so, you’ll have to keep one end of the elastic at the midpoint of your waist. The second end of the elastic will wrap around your waist and come to the position of the first end. In this position, mark the sign on the elastic.
- You can then cut this elastic to the exact size you need for your waist. Remember, during this method, you should not keep the elastic too tight or too loose. Instead, you should keep the elastic against your waist. It should sit nicely at your waist without compressing it too much.
Quick Highlight: During this method, the elastic doesn’t remain loose when you wrap it. Instead, it fits perfectly on your skin and compresses just like pants or trousers do. So, you don’t need to subtract a few inches (3 to 4) as we did in the previous methods. This makes the try-on method quicker and less complex.
How Much Elastic Do I Need For My Waist?
Honestly, there is no fixed answer when it comes to an elastic waist. Why? The reason is that the elastic you need depends on your waist length. If your waist is big, you’ll need more elastics and vice versa. For this, you’ll need to measure your waist. After that, you’ll have to subtract 3 to 4 inches from the waist length to get the precise size of the elastic.
This 3 to 4 inches reduction is essential, as it accounts for the elastic’s compression. Remember, we use elastic because it compresses and keeps the pants or trousers firm at the waist. The 3 to 4 inches go in this compression of the elastics. If you have 34-inch waist, then you should choose an elastic of 31 inches.
It is noteworthy that this 3 to 4 inches can vary depending on the purpose of the pants. For example, if your pants are sportswear, you’ll have to count 4 inches as a reduction. On the other hand, if your pants are nightwear, you should reduce waist length by about 1.5 inches. Here is the table showing exact inches for different garments:
| Garment Type | Suggested Reduction from Waist Length |
| Skirts | 1–2 inches less |
| Pants | 2–3 inches less |
| Children’s wear | 1–1.5 inches less |
| Sportswear | 3–4 inches less |
What is the Exact Elastic Size for My Waist?
As I said earlier, the elastic size you need depends on the size of your elastics. You can use the methods above to find the exact elastic size for your waist. Here is the table showing the elastic size for the most common waist lengths:
| Waist Length (inches) | Elastic Length Range (3–4″ Less) |
| 35 inches | 31 – 32 inches |
| 34 inches | 30 – 31 inches |
| 33 inches | 29 – 30 inches |
| 32 inches | 28 – 29 inches |
| 31 inches | 27 – 28 inches |
| 30 inches | 26 – 27 inches |
| 29 inches | 25 – 26 inches |
| 28 inches | 24 – 25 inches |
Conclusion
The use of elastic is common in different garments. These include pants, trousers, pajamas, skirts and so on. However, many seem confused when choosing the right size of elastic for the waist. Remember, if you decide on elastic without carefully considering size, you’ll end up buying the wrong size. As a result, the same elastic won’t work properly and may cause trouble when you use them on pants or trousers. In this article, I have discussed the two most common methods for finding the right elastic waist size.
